Angélique Kidjo Biography

Angélique Kpasseloko Hinto Hounsinou Kandjo Manta Zogbin Kidjo, professionally known as Angélique Kidjo, was born on July 14, 1960, in Ouidah, and raised in Cotonou. She grew up in a vibrant artistic family; her father worked in a bank while her mother, Yvonne Kidjo, was a choreographer, theatre director, and owner of a performing arts troupe. Angélique Kidjo began singing with her mother’s theatre troupe as a child, which exposed her to traditional African rhythms and stage performance. By her teenage years, she had already become well known locally for her powerful voice and energetic performances. However, during the political climate of the 1980s in Benin, she moved to Paris, where she studied jazz at the CIM School of Jazz and began building her international music career. Her breakthrough came in 1991 with the release of the album Logozo, which introduced her vibrant fusion of African rhythms, funk, jazz, and pop to a global audience. The album helped establish her as one of Africa’s most influential international musicians. Over the years, she released several acclaimed albums including Oremi, Black Ivory Soul, Djin Djin, and Mother Nature, showcasing her ability to blend traditional African music with global genres such as jazz, R&B, Afro-pop, and Latin music. Kidjo’s music has earned her numerous international honors, including multiple Grammy Awards for Best Global Music Album. Beyond music, she is widely recognized for her humanitarian work and cultural advocacy. She also serves as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador, using her platform to advocate for children’s rights, girls’ education, and social development across Africa. Throughout her career, Angélique Kidjo has collaborated with many global artists and continues to perform on major international stages. She is widely celebrated as one of Africa’s most influential musicians, known for bringing African music, languages, and culture to a worldwide audience while inspiring new generations of artists.
