Davido Biography
David Adedeji Adeleke, professionally known as Davido, was born on November 21, 1992, in Atlanta, United States, and raised in Lagos. He comes from a wealthy and influential family; his father, Adedeji Adeleke, is a renowned billionaire businessman, while his late mother, Veronica Adeleke, was a respected academic. Despite his privileged background, Davido developed a deep passion for music at an early age.
Davido’s upbringing exposed him to both Western and African cultures, shaping his unique musical style. While studying Business Administration at Oakwood University in Alabama, he began making music and bought recording equipment to produce his own tracks. His passion for music soon took over, leading him to drop out of the university to focus fully on his craft, a decision that initially did not sit well with his family.
Determined to succeed, Davido returned to Nigeria and later enrolled at Babcock University, where he eventually earned a degree in Music after his father funded the creation of a music department for him to complete his education. Around this time, he started gaining attention in the Nigerian music scene with his production skills and unique sound.
His breakthrough came in 2011 with the release of his hit single "Dami Duro", which quickly became a street anthem and established him as a rising star in the Nigerian music industry. In 2012, he released his debut album :Omo Baba Olowo", which featured several hit songs and earned him widespread recognition. His energetic style, catchy hooks, and strong connection with fans helped him stand out in the competitive Afrobeats scene.
Davido continued his rise with multiple hit singles and collaborations, eventually releasing his sophomore album "A Good Time" in 2019, which included the global hit "Fall" one of the longest-charting Nigerian pop songs in the United States. He followed this with "A Better Time" (2020), featuring international collaborations, and later released "Timeless" (2023), a critically acclaimed project that further cemented his global status.
As one of the leading figures in Afrobeats, Davido has played a major role in taking African music to the global stage alongside artists like Wizkid and Burna Boy. His music blends Afrobeats with elements of pop, dancehall, and R&B, making it appealing to a wide international audience. Over the years, he has received numerous awards, including BET Awards, MTV Africa Music Awards, and international recognitions.
Beyond music, Davido is known for his philanthropy and strong connection with fans, often engaging in charitable acts and supporting upcoming artists. He is also the founder of Davido Music Worldwide (DMW), a record label that has helped nurture new talents in the Nigerian music industry.
