Lucky Dube Biography
Lucky Dube, born Lucky Philip Dube on August 3, 1964, in Ermelo, Mpumalanga, was a South African reggae musician and one of Africa’s most influential reggae voices. Raised in a modest household, he developed a passion for music at an early age, initially performing traditional Zulu music before transitioning into reggae.
Lucky Dube began his professional music career in the early 1980s, first recording mbaqanga albums before discovering reggae, a genre that aligned with his message of social justice and equality. His breakthrough came with the 1987 album Slave, which sold over a million copies and established him as a leading reggae artist in Africa.
Throughout his career, Lucky Dube used his music to address themes of apartheid, freedom, love, unity, and human rights. His powerful voice and conscious lyrics earned him international recognition, leading to performances across Africa, Europe, and the United States.
He released over 20 albums, including globally celebrated projects like Prisoner and Victims, solidifying his legacy as a reggae icon.
Though he passed away in 2007, Lucky Dube remains one of Africa’s most respected reggae legends, remembered for his fearless activism and timeless music.
